John Misto’s award winning play, Shoe-Horn Sonata tells the story of two women, Australian nurse, Bridie Cartwright and an English school girl, Sheila Richards. The story begins with the two women being brought together for the first time in fifty years by a flim-maker chronicling their stories of capture by the Japanese army in 1942, whilst trying to escape Singapore. Their reunion is filled with laughter and tears and a shoe-horn which holds a dark secret that has kept the pair apart for half a century. Using footage from the National Film and Sound Archive and his own past movie productions, director Stephen Wallace creates a visually evocative and sensitive production of this iconic Australian play.
Impulse Theatre Company: Stephen Wallace and Michael Gillett formed Impulse Theatre Company in 2002 whilst working on productions of Oedipus the King and Lysistrata. Prior to this both Stephen and Michael had worked in film, television and theatre. Since 2006 the Company has annually produced plays from the HSC text list including As You Like It, Romeo and Juliet, Cosi, Away and Shoe-Horn Sonata. The continuing success of these productions has gained Impulse Theatre a devoted following of English and Drama teachers. This 2016 production of Shoe-Horn Sonata is the company's eighth, having first produced the play in 2009.
The calibre of the performance was absolutely outstanding. This is the third time I have taken a year 12 group to see a performance of Shoe-Horn Sonata and this one was by far the most superior. I discovered new ideas from this production to help me in my teaching purely due to the nuance and attention to detail from the actors. Well worth the trip for us. Fantastic, thanks again.

Excellent. Our Year 12 English class attended the performance at the Figtree Theatre - Personally I found the performance an outstanding presentation of Misto's play. Talking with our students after the play I discovered that I was not the only one who cried during the moving performance.

Staging of the Shoe-Horn Sonata was marvellous. Students left the theatre with an appreciation for the play transformed from the school - studied script. Their understanding of the distinctively visual elements of the play - current HSC focus - was honed considerably. Well done Stephen Wallace and all the crew.

They were Excellent. It was an entertaining production that was presented very professionally. The women were very believable in the roles that they portrayed."
