Lullabies to Heavy Rock, A Capella to Pop and Loads of Participation.

Let the Music Move You focuses on music and movement and how the two are integrally linked. It is designed to engage students both as an audience and actively in the performance.

Whether it is the whole room involved in creating an avant-garde sound-scape using boom-wackers, spinning hoses, bells and voice or Karina performing her punk rock version of Jingle Bells, played on the bells and with new quirky Australian lyrics; students are encouraged to form their own opinions about each music genre explored.

Karina shows how for hundreds of years humans have sung to for both joyous and sad occassions, to put babies to sleep and to keep armies marching in time. National anthems, hymns and oral history songs are explored and students get to voice their own rally chants like, (What do we want? “Less homework” When do we want it? “Now”).

Students are surprised to realize how many holidays and events have their own song that we sing to celebrate them. As for themes to the more popular children’s television programs, Karina has only to hum a few notes before hands are raised, eager to identify them.

In music videos, directors hold our attention by constantly changing images. So live on stage, Karina with the help of a dozen volunteers and impressive props, shows how the live performance can be just as engaging. While singing the African classic Wimoweh, Karina directs the students as they create a very colourful jungle scene with some interesting surprises.

The strength of Let the Music Move You is its variety across music genres, from a capella to house, between watching and participating and the ever changing costumes and props.
