What better way to learn to appreciate what you have - than to lose it for a week

Twelve year old Georgia’s school project has her involved in a student exchange program, swapping places with Matilda for a week.

Georgia is a suburban Sydney girl whose passions are ballet, netball and the Rabbitohs. Matilda lives in country Victoria with poor internet reception and daily chores on an apple orchard where the main topics of conversation are the drought and the weather.

While the pair sees the similarities between their lives, it is the differences that they come to focus on. Georgia discovers how Matilda's Great, Great Grandfather travelled by ship from Cornwall to the Bendigo gold fields hoping to make his fortune. However it was as a banker that Bob earnt the money to buy the rural property in country Victoria where Matilda lives today.

During their exchange week both girls gain an understanding and appreciation of not just each other, but of each other’s community. This in turn leads them to gain a better understanding of their own life, community and contribution to the rest of Australia.

Trading Places explores diversity, similarities and differences in communities, their interconnections across Australia and how this has shaped our nation’s past, present and future.
