Promoting endurance, perseverance and being a good sport.

Shelly has a video assignment to complete on “Australian Sporting Legends”.

Shelly’s only interest in sport is her own gymnastics.

Shelly is staying at her grandma’s place – NO INTERNET – Nooooooooo!

However, Grandma is a sport-crazy, retired synchronized swimming champion with a dark, dusty attic full of sporting memorabilia.

After some serious protesting, Shelly ventures into Grandma’s attic and to her own surprise, is soon blowing the dust off and enthusiastically rummaging through old suitcases, newspapers and sporting equipment. What she discovers is better than any internet search she has ever done. This is the real thing. There are magazines and newspaper clippings, photos and other paraphernalia documenting incredible sporting moments from Australia’s past. Some of it is about her own Grandma.

Shelly soon realises that most sporting heroes, regardless of whether they have found sporting glory on the athletics track, in the pool, on a wave or at the Gabba, share stories of endurance, perseverance, dedication and sometimes triumph.

From the lives and stories of the legendary figures of Don Bradman, Kathy Freeman and Dawn Fraser to name just a few, Shelly begins to understand how sport can unite and inspire both the individual and a nation.

With high energy physical theatre, storytelling, characterisation, audience participation, circus and slapstick skills, Shelly recreates historic moments in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways to make her amazing video to share with her history class.

Charlie J Truscott uses her physical theatre and circus skills to turn stories into highly physical, engaging experiences. A competitive gymnast from the age of 5 to 17, Charlie went on to pursue performance studies at university before “running away” to join the circus. She has trained at Dell Arte International School of Physical Theatre in California and worked with Sydney Children’s Festival, Sydney Royal Easter Show, Merringong Theatre Company, KISS Arts Festival and Sydney Festival to name to few.
