Benji
A celebration of Australian togetherness in the 21st century!

Journey with Benji through Chinese and Australian music, language, interactive games and ‘you-won’t-believe-your-eyes’ technology!

Did you know that the 2021 Australian census found that 48% of all Australians have a parent born overseas? So there’s never been a more important time than right now to rejoice in each others’ songs and stories! And who better to do that than a true-blue, Aussie musician with ancestral roots in Southern China; a storyteller who blends ancient instruments with mind-blowing digital technology and quirky musical games?

Born in Victoria Australia, Benji is a multi-instrumentalist and an award-winning guitarist. During the Beats ’n’ Pieces show, audiences will learn about several music, language and cultural traditions from all over the world, weaving hands-on games and activities throughout!

How about learning a few words in our very own second, national Australian language! Can you guess what it is?

Hint: It’s spoken in every state and territory, is very new (est. 1860’s) and can be spoken UNDERWATER! Why, it’s Auslan of course and what better way to learn a little Auslan than through interactive games using amazing, STEM-based technology - an incredible instrument that transmits sound through skin conductivity!

The show culminates in audience members lining up across the front of the stage to become human-digital-instruments to be played live by Benji! Students (and teachers if they are willing) will be chosen to stand on stage and don the magic headphones. Totally 100% safe and running on the equivalent of 3x AA batteries, the headphones once worn will transform the wearer into the notes of an instrument that can be triggered by high-fives or fist-bumps.

A wonderfully creative, musical show; book now and catch the magic of Beats 'n' Pieces!

What other schools have said:

Feedback from children was really awesome. One week later they have remembered that the pentatonic scale is in every culture. They remembered the flute was made from bone and is one of the oldest instruments. They loved the drum pad and many children told me they bought an App and have started to do what Benji showed us. It was different and fun. We are very grateful to have had a show for Harmony Week. He also spent time with me providing mentoring for using digital technology, which has been a huge gift to me.

Enthralling, everybody was captivated and walked away from the show confident to play music with each other! Unbelievable how such a simple concept could bring the children together making music. INSPIRATIONAL!
