Science Speak explores how to write an engaging speech using scientific facts and evidence.
It inspires us to be up-standers, to have the courage to speak up!
This award winning children's play combines vivid characters, laugh out loud comedy and eye catching physical theatre.
Performed by dynamic duo, Katie Burson and Beth Kayes, and featuring costumes by award-winning designer Elizabeth Whiting, Science Speak is about speech writing, scientists, the environment and the amazing monarch butterflies.
Lea, our protagonist, is writing her speech for school about the importance of butterflies. She is inspired by her grandma who is a butterfly scientist who is working to protect and preserve monarch butterflies in her area. Lea’s speech writing is interrupted by Carlo the caterpillar. He is claustrophobic and afraid to go into a chrysalis. Lea convinces him to overcome his fear of change by telling him incredible facts about butterflies and their central place in myths and legends.
Meanwhile, Lea’s Grandma is taking a city planner to the Environment Court. She wants to build a motorway through the precious butterfly winter home. The city planner threatens Grandma. Lea is worried but her grandma gives her a ‘scientists from the past’ gadget so she can learn about the courage of scientists. The madcap machine conjures up the courageous Marie Curie, Galileo and David Attenborough.
Lea is inspired and determined to help her grandma to save the butterfly winter home. When the city planner and Grandma come to a deadlock, Lea is called on to step into her grandmother’s shoes and speak up. She is terrified but overcomes her nerves and delivers her speech, just in time!
"Thank you for sharing some great science and scientists with our students in an entertaining way. It was fantastic to discover the speechwriting aspect of their performance - highly relevant for our 5/6 students who were presenting speeches themselves in a competition that same evening. Our younger cohort loved the comedy and interaction, hitting the mark for all of our students, which is no easy feat. Bravo!"
